Learn How to Build the Perfect Cheese Board in two different themes that will rock your parties. These cheeseboards are great for holiday parties and gatherings!
Because every party needs at least one cheese board and there are so many options out there, let me tell you how to build the perfect cheese board!
When I partnered with Kaukauna® Cheese to design a tutorial on how to make the perfect cheese board, I knew I would love every bit of the project. I mean, we are talking delicious cheese coming in a variety of forms like balls and logs and flavors paired with delicious fixings on two different boards! And you know what? Both these boards can be built simultaneously and in less than 20 minutes! Talk about being efficient. I got a cute cheeseboard from Kaukauna® Cheese with a nice little cheese knife!
So, let's talk party. I like to have my parties as humble and comfortable as possible, especially if it's just a gathering of family or friends for a nice evening. Here, as you can see, to set my table, I started with a blue and white runner that matches the small plates. To give a nice contrast, I placed a pot of chrysanthemum with a beautiful red and yellow color to match the theme.
To build the cheeseboards, I placed them together. This one that you see now is a "sweet" cheese board and the next one is a "savory" cheeseboard.
A very important note about how to build the perfect cheese board is the board itself. It should be the right size for your party and you ingredients. Not too big, not too small. I like to keep things simple so, if you don't have a wooden board, a platter would work just as well.
I like to start building my cheese boards with cheese because that will give me a vision of how much space I have and where I can add the next items.
For the sweet cheeseboard, I have 3 types of cheese: Feta, Brie and Kaukauna® Sharp Cheddar Cheese Log, which is made with 100% real cheddar. In my opinion, these flavors match very well with sweet items and ingredients.
For the savory board, I use Cambozola, Cheddar Gruyer cheese and Kaukauna® Asiago cheese ball. On this cheeseboard, we have both mild and strong flavors of cheese that will go well with savory items.
Next come the crackers, or basically anything that you would like to spread the cheese on. I used three types of crackers for the sweet board. You can use small pieces of bread or any other types of crackers that matches your preference (gluten free, paloe, etc)
And I used two types of crackers for my "savory" board.
Next comes the fun part! It's time to figure out what matches with the cheeses we selected. I like to use seasonal products and things that are available in almost every supermarket. Here I used both fresh and dried fruit. For fresh fruit I used persimmons, grapes and pears. I also added dried apricots, dates, dried bananas and raisins. Bananas give a great flavor to the combination and because they are dried, you don't need to worry about them going bad or anything!
I try not to use fruit that I think might fall apart or spread around because I don't like the items on the cheese board to mix together.
For the savory board I used green Spanish olives and rainbow tomatoes. I'm sure black olives will be super good, too!
We are almost there! Nuts are so good for the sweet board because they match very well with both cheese and fruit. I used a non smoked, no salt set of nuts including almonds, pecans, pistachio and walnuts. If you like to jazz things up, you can use flavored nuts, too.
I finished my savoy cheeseboard with smoked salmon and pastrami. I say use at least two types of meat on your board. I suggest to add the meat right before serving whereas you can have the cheese and other items out one or two hours before serving.
I added two spreads to the sweet board. I used my homemade cranberry apple sauce and a mixed berry spread that is SO easy to make. Both go so well with everything on the board!
See, now you know how to build the perfect cheese board! It's easy, super delicious and so fun. Try to come up with your own combinations and matches. If there are too many options out there, go simple. Simple is always the best!
You can find everything you need, including different varieties of Kaukauna®, at your local Kroger and Kroger banner stores.
