Why this recipe works
- Quick to make: You can put a delicious dinner on the table in no time and everyone will ask for seconds.
- Uses pantry staples: You only need a few ingredients to make this recipe and you can totally use store-bought marinara sauce if that’s what you have on hand.
- Customizable: This recipe uses green bell peppers, but you can use other vegetables as well.
Ingredients
To make a tasty one pot sausage pasta you need the following ingredients:
- Pasta: I used rottini to make this recipe, however, penne or bow tie pasta would work perfectly. I have not tried this recipe with spaghetti yet.
- Sausage: My favorite is Italian chicken sausage. It has less fat and is very delicious.
- Onion and garlic: Every delicious dish starts with sautéing onion and garlic in some olive oil and this one is no exception.
- Bell pepper: I love bell peppers in pasta because of their flavor. You can use any color bell pepper.
- Crushed tomatoes: To make this pasta taste so fresh and have enough liquid to make it creamy, we use crushed tomatoes.
- Spices: Since the sausage has a lot of flavor on its own, you just need a bit of thyme and paprika for this recipe.
- Chicken broth and water: To cook the pasta in instant pot, you can use chicken broth and water (or just one of them).
- Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese: I love stirring some fresh mozzarella in pasta at the very end. It makes the pasta extra delicious and creamy. Parmesan is used to top the pasta.

Variations
You can add different ingredients to the sausage sauce for pasta such as spinach, broccoli, peas, mushrooms or kale. Add any of these ingredients to the sausage sauce after you browned the sausage and right before adding the crushed tomatoes.
Storing leftovers
You can store the leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dish since it might lose its texture and flavor.

We love Italian sausage with pasta. Making it in the Instant pot makes it even better!
If I wanted to double this recipe how long should I cook it for in the instant pot?
The timing will be the same.
I assume you cut sausages into smaller pieces after browning??
Yes 🙂 You can break them just like you do with ground beef.
Can this be made using frozen links?
Hi Amy, I have not tried it with frozen links so I’m not sure. I would probably thaw them before adding them.
Looks great can you use sweet italian pork sausage too?
Hi Lori! Yes, you can use sweet Italian pork sausage as well. Enjoy!

Hi Patty! Hope you enjoy the recipe!
This has become a staple in my weekly meal plan! The whole family loves it!!
This pasta dish looks amazing!
Thank you!
I feel like the liquid component is too much for an instant pot, my pasta end up looking like a soup more than a creamy pasta… i feel like 14 oz crushed tomatoes could haven been 12 and only 2 cups chicken broth no water would have made more a sauce. We have to consider that there is much less need of liquid in an instant pot recipe. I made another recipe before for 8 oz pasta and there was two cups total liquid. Plus tomatoe dauce and it came out perfect
