    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • This is an easy fall apple recipe that doesn't require any specific skills. It's simple and great for a new cook.
    • This healthy apple dessert is made with wholesome ingredients and doesn't contain any refined sugar.
    • You can easily double or triple this recipe to feed a crowd.

What Kind Of Apple Is Best For Baking?

You can use a variety of apples to make this recipe. Some of our favorites are Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Gala and Golden Delicious. When purchasing apples to make individual baked apples, make sure they are well rounded and have no brown spots.

    Ingredients

To make this recipe you need apples, walnuts, oats, olive oil, honey, raisins and spices.
    • Apples: I used Honeycrisp, but other varieties such as Gala and Pink Lady would would work, too.
    • Olive oil: Enhances the flavors and gives some mild earthy notes.
    • Honey: To sweeten the filling, we opted for honey.
    • Oats: You can use old fashioned or quick oats for the filling.
    • Cinnamon: Apple and cinnamon go hand in hand and complement each other very well. It'll give the apples some warmth in flavor.
    • Dried fruit: I used California raisins to make the filling, but you can also use chopped apricots or golden raisins.
    • Nuts: Chopped walnuts, pistachios, pecans or cashews all work fine.

    How To Make Baked Apples

Core the apples, make the filling, stuff and bake the apples.
    1. Core the apples: Using a sharp paring knife, cut around the stem and remove it. Using a small spoon, scoop out the inside of the apple. Be careful not to break the apple or keep the bottom intact.
    2. Make the filling: In a bowl mix the olive oil, honey, oats, cinnamon, pinch of salt, chopped walnuts and raisins.
    3. Stuff the apples: Using a small spoon, spoon the filling into the apples.
    4. Bake: Place the stuffed apples in an oven safe baking dish, add ½ cup water and bake at 375 degrees F for 45 to 55 minutes.

    Sliced Baked Apples

Another way to make baked apples is to slice them and place them all in a baking pan with the rest of the ingredients. Here are the instructions:

    1. Peel and slice the apples and place them in an oven safe baking dish.
    2. Add in the olive oil, honey, spices, oats, cinnamon, salt, walnuts and raisins to the apples. Stir using a large wooden spoon.
    3. Bake at 375 degrees F for 35 to 45 minutes until the apples are tender but not mushy.

    How To Serve Baked Apples

There are several ways to serve these baked apples. You can serve them warm or at room temperature with some vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. I love mine with a dollop of yogurt and some honey.

What To Do With The Leftovers

Store the leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or in the oven at 300 degrees F for 15 minutes.

    Frequently Asked Question

How long does it take to bake apples?

For whole stuffed apples, it usually takes 45 to 55 minutes for them to cook. Keep in mind that they should still be somewhat firm when ready, otherwise they'll be super mushy. As for the sliced apples, the baking time is about 35 minutes.

How to know if the baked apples are ready?

Insert a small knife very gently into the side of the apple. If it goes in easily, it's ready.

    Are baked apples mushy?

Baked apples should not be mushy and should keep their shape. While they're tender and slice easily, they still have a bite to them.
